A winch counter helps you set your anchor depth consistently and bring it back in without second-guessing. But it matters which type you’re buying. A drum winch counter (also called a drum anchor winch counter) is designed specifically for drum winches, counting rope/chain movement off the drum so you can track how much you’ve deployed and use it as an anchor depth marker on the water.
That’s different to an anchor chain counter used on a windlass. Windlass counters measure chain passing over the gypsy, which is great for windlasses, but if you run a drum winch, choosing a drum-specific counter is the most reliable way to get an accurate anchor depth marker without mismatched hardware.

It’s a counter that tracks deployment/retrieval on a drum winch to indicate anchor depth.
Windlass counters measure chain over a gypsy; drum counters measure off the drum. Different mechanics, different fit.
It’s built for Savwinch drum winches, but compatibility varies with other drum winch systems.
If you want repeatable anchoring, quicker resets, and clearer depth reference—yes.
