Savwinch Boat Anchor Winch Specialists

Our standard drum winch range includes nine sizes, plus two larger Free Fall/Commercial options. These are general recommendations, but you're welcome to choose a larger winch – many customers do, especially if they need more rope or chain capacity. If you're still unsure, you're welcome to give us a call on +61 (03) 8361 8841, email info@savwinch.com, and we'll help you find the perfect fit.

Winches are powerful tools, but incorrect installation can pose serious risks. To ensure both your safety and the reliability of your winch, Savwinch strongly recommends professional installation by a trained marine mechanic or marine electrician. Proper setup not only protects your equipment but also ensures smooth and trouble-free operation on the water.

Both winches and capstans help with pulling heavy loads, but they work in different ways. A drum winch has a barrel that winds up rope or steel cable as it pulls. A capstan, on the other hand, has a rotating drum that provides pulling power but doesn't wind the rope or cable around it – instead, the line stays free, allowing for continuous movement. If you need to lift, haul, or secure something on the water, choosing the right tool makes all the difference.

Keeping your anchor winch in top shape is simple with regular care. Even high-quality 316 stainless steel can rust, so routine cleaning is key. Here's how to maintain your winch for long-lasting performance:

• Rinse Regularly – Unwind the rope and wash the winch thoroughly to remove sand, salt, and grit.
• Dry & Protect – After cleaning, dry the winch completely and apply a light spray of lanolin or a similar lubricant to prevent corrosion.
• Check for Damage – Any scratches or damage to the surface should be repaired immediately to avoid rust.
• Use a Cover – When not in use, a close-fitting cover helps protect your winch from the elements.

Yes, you can use a boat anchor winch in saltwater conditions, but it's important to choose a winch made from the right materials to ensure long-lasting performance. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel is the ideal choice for saltwater environments due to its superior corrosion resistance, thanks to the molybdenum alloy. To ensure your winch is marine-grade, use a magnet – marine-grade stainless steel (like 316) will not be magnetic. You can also perform spark and acid tests to verify its quality. By selecting a winch made from genuine marine-grade stainless steel, you can count on durability and effectiveness in saltwater.

Power requirements depend on anchor weight, total rode length, and conditions. Most recreational setups run on 12V systems, but motor size and gearbox ratios matter more than raw power. Heavier boats, longer chain, or frequent anchoring demand higher torque, not just speed.

Yes. Choosing a slightly larger winch reduces motor strain, lowers operating temperatures, and improves reliability over time. An oversized winch handles heavier loads with less effort, especially in wind or current, which helps extend motor, gearbox, and electrical component life.

Free-fall systems (like our Commercial Series Anchor Winches) allow the anchor to deploy under controlled gravity rather than motor power. This removes load from the motor and gearbox during deployment, reducing heat buildup, mechanical stress, and clutch wear – especially important for frequent anchoring or deeper water use.

Look for thermal overload protection, sealed IP-rated motors, emergency manual release, secure rope management, and reliable braking or load-holding systems. Remote controls and helm switches improve operator safety, while smooth, controlled deployment reduces shock loads on the boat and anchoring system.
